Moumita Basak Stitches the Lives of Village Women

Moumita Basak works with a needle as much as a brush, and the choice is the whole point.

Born in 1996 in West Bengal, she earned her BFA and MFA in painting at the Government College of Art and Craft in Calcutta. Her practice is eco-feminist and rooted in Kantha, the Bengali tradition of stitched textile, which she uses to hold the everyday labour, memory and ecology of women's lives in the countryside she comes from.

It is a practice on the rise: she received the Inlaks Fine Art Award for 2026 and has spent time at Khoj, one of India's most important spaces for experimental art.
