Aaryama Somayaji Paints What the Kitchen Remembers
Recipes, kitchens, and the quiet history held in a family meal, turned into ink, etching and paint by an artist who treats food as a way of remembering who we are.
Some artists paint faces. Aaryama Somayaji paints kitchens, and the memory a kitchen holds.
Raised in India and now based in Singapore, she trained in visual communication at the National Institute of Design and went on to an MA in Fine Arts at LASALLE. She works across ink and acrylic, ceramic, copper etching, paper and fabric, and illustrates picture books. The through-line is food: recipes, food histories, and the way a shared meal quietly carries identity.
It is an unusually generous subject. Almost everyone has a kitchen table somewhere in their past, and her work reaches for exactly that, the small rituals of feeding people that outlast so much else.
